Certification is a simple, but rigorous, process. The Green Restaurant Association verifies all of the sustainability steps being implemented, helps restaurants make additional necessary changes, and then certifies locations against its eight environmental categories at one of four levels of certification.  

 

“Almost all restaurants can reach Level One Certified Green Restaurant® status; and what we find is that with additional small changes, we are able to help Level One Certified Green Restaurants® move up certification levels over time,” says Michael Oshman, CEO of the Green Restaurant Association. 

 

Not only are these restaurants making significant strides in improving their environmental footprints, they are also seeing the benefits of implementing sustainability steps spread to other areas too. “We have event planners that choose BLACKBARN based on our sustainability efforts, so it’s really paying off”, said John Doherty, owner of BLACKBARN, a Certified Green Restaurant® right outside of Madison Square Park
